Autumn 1997

Roving Reporter gets a round in with Jarman

An invitation arrived on my desk for "A Seminar and Golf/Country Club Event" and promised to be an entertaining and informative day. So, on Monday 1 September 1997, I went along to Mentmore Golf and Country Club to find out...

The programme for the day was a seminar entitled "Profit Improvement through IT" followed by a buffet lunch and activities in the afternoon.

The seminar went at lightning speed with the speakers coming thick and fast covering a wide range of topics. The seminar was not aimed at pushing any particular service/product but to educate clients on a variety of topics including:

Some of the points which came across quite strongly were that the world is shrinking and partnerships are a way to move forward as it is not possible to be good at everything. IT can give your business the competitive edge and technology need not be a killing cost and that size is not everything but service is important.

The speakers included David Jarman of Jarman Systems and Andrew Morris of Pick Systems, with guest speakers from a leasing company and Frank Watkins, a Web Design Consultant.

The talks were visual, entertaining and well illustrated. One of the most memorable was the comparison and usage of the model plane named D3 which later provided the "High Flyer" flying display with six flights!

A considerable amount of ground was covered in the morning prior to the scrumptious buffet lunch. Shortly after 1 o'clock the competition began with the first golf tee times. If you did not fancy a round of golf you had the opportunity to attend a Golf Clinic with 1 hour of tuition.

Non-golfers had the opportunity to play tennis, relax in the bar, surf the Internet or swim, sauna and jacuzzi. The activities were not compulsory but most participated and enjoyed something.

At the close of the afternoon, we all met back in the bar for Danish pastries and coffee and the prizes. The Golf Competition was won by Rudge Bowen from Pick Systems with George Ellis (PEP) and Ernie Wallace coming in joint second place.

The day was everything it promised to be: entertaining and informative. It was also exhausting but perhaps that stemmed from too much time spent in the pool! I would like to congratulate Jarman and Pick Systems on a good day from the entertainment perspective but perhaps more importantly on the seminar content. If this day is an example of that little extra touch you give to your customers, then congratulations to your customers for choosing you. A real example of true post-sale customer care!
