Falcon set to fly in August

Unidata Inc of Denver, Colorado, expects its new object-relational database product to ship in late August. Code-named Falcon, the new product enters beta-testing in July, and has been described in the industry as an attempt at a "Universal Server".

Falcon was created by melding Unidata's own RDBMS with O2 Technology's object database, harnessing the power of the Unidata database to the O2 programming language and specialities such as Java bindings, in a client-server model.

Initially the server application will have to be written with tools from O2 and the client in an ODBC-compliant environment such as Visual Basic. The upcoming autumn release of RedBack v1.4 will enable all parts of the application to be written using the same tools, streamlining development on Falcon. This release will also offer support for Oracle and Informix databases.

Reassuringly for its existing users, Unidata has stated that the new Falcon product is intended to be offered alongside its existing database, rather than instead of it.
