Unidata and Microsoft have formed a strategic alliance to integrate Unidata's data-mapping middleware with Microsoft's component object model (COM) architecture.
The alliance will enable the two companies to offer Unidata's 500,000+ end-users the ability to access multiple data repositories and to develop object-oriented applications using Microsoft SQL Server and OLE DB connectivity.
Its goal is to produce a single application server and data storage package combining Windows NT, SQL Server, OLE DB, UniData RDBMS, and, soon, Microsoft Transaction Server.
Initial objectives are to build an OLE DB interface to allow SQL Server access to UniData databases, and "SQLator" technology to transform the database into an application server for deploying UniData-based applications on SQL Server.
SQLator will support production OLTP applications, maintaining the low cost of ownership of the NT/SQL Server platform. Unidata will also provide full integration to COM and distributed COM (DCOM) in its new object-relational universal server database, code-named Falcon.
