Repton Data, Pick Systems’ largest distributor, has built its business responding to the needs of small and medium-size VARs, consultants, and users. This month they are answering demand for a low cost, low maintenance conversion to open systems.
EZ-Open goes to market September 15 offering traditional Pick users all the potential power of open systems without loss of "Native Pick" administrative and programming simplicity. As a bonus, Repton promises the changeover can normally be accomplished with less than an hour of install time and only a few hours of training for most lay users.
Repton’s experts targeted the need to reduce the learning curve and administrative costs associated with open systems as a primary need. They have produced a front end administration package offering dummy proof set-ups and assured archiving of all core-settings and recovery media. Top-down organisation presents a "cookbook" structure, radically reducing the effort and skill needed to set up and administer. Streamlined concepts of users, groups and agents further reduce potential errors.
The EZ-Open package includes Pick Systems’ D3 Linux and Linux O/S eliminating the need to buy a separate operating system or database. EZ-Open bundles the 4-Word desktop suite to provide users full e-mail and fax-on-demand capabilities with less than 30 minutes worth of work. The PicLan IP Web Server is also incorporated to provide a low-cost pathway to GUI applications. It allows programmers to build HTML compliant web applications as easily as those in character-based mode.
At the user level, a step by step configuration with help balloons teaches open systems principles in-line as the user proceeds. Open system features now available to users include: e-mail, fax-on-demand, correspondence word processor, document sharing, remote printing, DNS networks, Internet connectivity, server connections, web services, SQL and a host of other options. Existing Pick documents may also be "printed" to e-mail and fax-print queues.
