Via Systems introduces UniVision for Linux and a new pricing program

Via Systems has introduced UniVision for Linux, with a pricing model that lowers the cost of ownership of the database system by as much as 90%, compared to the cost of similar products and programs offered by MultiValue industry competitors.

“Both the Linux and NT versions of UniVision are available with this new pricing program,” said Robin T White, Via president. “There’s a zero upfront license fee, with annual use/support fees from $39 to $59 per seat. The annual cost includes rights to use, all updates and technical support, over the web, or by telephone.”

The unprecedented low cost enables a MultiValue user to spend less than $50 a year per seat to get a fully functioning, powerful Pick/General Automation compatible database implementation for this increasingly popular platform. “Our new prices compare to competitor’s costs of between $400 and $500 per seat, plus a $50 per seat annual support fee,” declared White.

UniVision now provides functionally identical implementations for AIX, NCR, SVR4, SCO OpenServer and Unixware, NT and Linux. UniVision is compatible with existing applications running on Pick, D3, AP and R83, General Automation, Mentor and Ultimate.

UniVision’s Linux and NT implementations will also be available in Shareware versions that can be downloaded at http://ww.via.com.

White said the new UniVision offering was originally developed by “our UK parent, EDP Ltd., a prominent player in the database market worldwide. It’s a field-proven model with many thousands of users, offering many extensions and improvements in reliability and ease of use.”

For end users, White pointed to a unique ‘wizard guided’ installation feature for Linux, and UniVision’s superfast file access with the advanced Prefix B+ Indexing system . Another feature that distinguishes UniVision is its ability to keep real time backups of data using the product’s Replication Filing System.

Developers will benefit from UniVision’s ability to update and validate multiple files using database triggers, integration with UNIX, Linux and NT files within Data/Basic programs, UniVision’s Virtual Filing System, and Extensions to Q-pointers, providing scalability and transparent multi-host file distribution.

Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Via Systems is a subsidiary of Electronic Data Processing PLC, a UK company publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange. Via also has facilities in New York City.
