UK town hall lead the way with Linux

Brentwood and Bridgnorth Borough Councils have rolled out Linux in a recent deal with database specialist, Pick Systems, and its VAR, Sanderson Brookstreet. These are the first known Linux installations by public administrations in Europe.

Currently, both councils are using a Linux/Pick D3 database solution for core development work. However, Brentwood Council is evaluating Linux, with a view to using it as an enterprise system within 12 months.

Both councils decided to adopt Linux because it was the most resilient, reliable and cost-effective platform upon which to evaluate Pick Systems’ D3 database. This is because there is no need to pay for expensive licences and, unlike other operating systems, Linux can run on low-powered computers that cost significantly less to install.

“Linux is a first-class operating system that performs as well as, if not better than, NT and at a fraction of the cost,” said Geoffrey Brambill, IT manager at Brentwood Borough Council. “We are currently evaluating Linux for an enterprise system that would traditionally have sat on NT.”

“We could be installing Linux as an enterprise operating system within 12 months, a move that would save the tax payer a significant amount of money. Indeed, in the long-term, Linux could replace NT altogether,” he continued.

Pick’s D3 database is widely used in the public sector and has been Linux compatible since 1994. For this reason, Pick is able to facilitate widespread use of Linux within local authorities. The multi-dimensional D3 model allows users to focus on managing highly organised data according to their particular needs, and is renowned for being excellent value for money.

“We have been recommending Linux to our customers in the public sector for some time now as the most logical and cost-effective way to upgrade their systems, especially those built on older Unix platforms,” said Nigel Town, UK country manager at Pick Systems. “I am sure that Bridgnorth and Brentwood will be the first of many public sector Linux installations to come.”

“Now that these two councils have taken the lead with Linux, it is inevitable that other councils will follow,” said Ken Hughes, sales manager at Sanderson Brookstreet. “Indeed, a number of our existing Pick D3 customers in local government have told me they are considering Linux for projects in the near future.”
