Pick 2000

http://members.wbs.net/homepages/p/i/c/pick2000

This is a very new site, circa July 1998. The aim of this site is to provide code, tips and tidbits to share with the Pick community. Indeed, they are still looking for contributions written by members of the community who are willing to share their knowledge with others.

The layout of this site is clear and user friendly. It has a lovely organised feel to it. Graphics have not been over-used so this site is fast to load which bearing in mind that it is an information site for serious information seekers and not aimed at attracting the casual surfer will only add to its quality and not detract from it.

At this moment in time, the site is still quite small content-wise but has obviously been planned to facilitate holding vast quantities of information in an organised and user-friendly fashion. I believe a lot of forethought has gone into producing this site.

There is a page dedicated to assisting browsers get on to the Pick Newsgroup using Dejanews (www.dejanews.com). Helpful, thoughtful addition here.

The page of interesting links is not very full but give it time. I will be interested to see how this develops, whether into another listing of industry related sites or... let's wait and watch.

The actual site content is a little light at the moment and I feel needs some co-operation from people within the Pick community and to share like a community (!) however it does already possess some good articles including:

This latter article, whilst not rocket science stuff, does include some useful program examples:

The site has so far been visited by 391 people since July 1998. What were their opinions?

"Pretty nice site."

"Found your site from reference in CDP... I may have some code snippets for you... a complete guestbook application... And I may have other things of interest."

"Excellent start, will have to keep a watch on this site."

"Nice!!! I will try to supply you with some of my utilities."

"Just arrived here from the pick newsgroup. Good to see a site dedicated to a decent product that deserves recognition."

"...an admirable task. I'll put together some utilities and e-mail them to you as .txt files..."

The negative of this site is that it appears to be requesting for donations to the site but it does not appear to really make it clear how one does this! I believe email to alex@cts.com might be one way. This point has been brought to Steve Alexander's attention and may even be more clear on the site before this article is published!

Conclusion

Although this site is still obviously in its infancy, it promises to be a site worth keeping an eye on. It is well planned and thought out site with good usage of frames and no over-abuse of needless graphics so maintaining speed. An excellent concept and what promises to be a welcome community service.

I get the impression that this is a "please give generously site" rather than a one-man crusade by Steve Alexander. Let's give this guy a hand and help his vision come to fruition. I believe this site if supported by the community will benefit the community. Steve has received some good offers for content so:

Let's give generously to what promises to be a good community site!
